King Solomon's Monkeys

I was reading in 1 Kings yesterday about King Solomon and the wealth that he accumulated when I got to a verse that said he received merchant ships every three years laden with gold, silver, ivory, apes and monkeys.

Apes and monkeys? What did he do with apes and monkeys? Did he have a zoo? A circus? Did he train them to run errands? And what happened to them? Are there monkeys and apes now running around the Middle East?

I’ve never given much thought to apes or monkeys in a biblical, historical sense, other than imagining them hanging from the rafters on Noah’s Ark. Now I have a vision of apes and monkeys meandering around King Solomon’s palace, which, quite frankly, makes the story a bit more interesting.
